Subject: 1969 "390"
Ranchero
Tony & Sharon's '69 Ranchero was
in the need of a little help in the acceleration department. Tony spent
most of the last several weeks getting the fluid leaks from this massive
390CID V-8 taken care of, he also chalked what he thought was the
correct timing marks on the harmonic balancer.
It was after he couldn't keep up
with the acceleration of a couple of Corvairs that he realized
that something need to be done. The plan was made to have a "Tech
Session" at his house and that Ed, Steve, Tom and I were to come over
and make a "Luncheon" out of it as well, and let the "Krusin' Knitters",
Evelyn, Cheryl, Edna, Linda and Sharon, have a chat and a knitting
session while the Guys work on the Car. Tom & Edna were unable to join
us, they sure wanted to, but Tom is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday and
needed to prepare for it. Tom, you were missed and know you will make
the next one.
Tony had ordered and received
the Pertronix II, and Vacuum Advance by Friday and was all set for this
session. Last night coming home form the Saturday Nite Cruise, when he
kicked in the Holley 4 Barrel, the noise sounded like it might have been
fast, but the little Corvair coupe was not catchable, this was not
right! How embarrassing! Good thing that tomorrow we were all getting
together to take care of the rest of the problems.
Linda and I were the first to
arrive, well we are the closest, Ed & Evelyn had to travel nearly 30
miles and had to drop of a borrowed car to Tom on the way. Steve &
Cheryl traveled just a few miles less. Steve got out of the car with a
bit of a limp, seems as though it is real hard to push one of those
little Corvairs into a trailer when the brakes are rusted to the drums!
But that is another story, Ed & Steve can share with you about the trip
to Philadelphia via Atlanta themselves.
Tony & I got the car and
replacement parts ready for Steve & Ed, they were to perform the
upgrade. Immediately Steve started in on the distributor, having done
this so many times, Tony replaced the Coil with a new Flamethrower Coil
and before we knew it, the engine was ready to crank up. Just about that
time Ed & Evelyn pulled in. Steve rested his bones in a chair and Ed
took over. While checking everything out he noticed that the "Oil
Switch" was leaking, this should be the very last leak, we all are
thinking. Ed & Tony had to make a run to Central Auto to pick up a new
switch. While Ed was putting it in he noticed that the chalk marks were
just off a bit. The 0 degree and the 6 degrees BTC were re-marked.
After the sending switch was
replaced, it was found to be defective but did not leak. The timing was
set and the Carburetor adjusted, the engine sounded better than Tony or
any of us ever heard it run. A few more starts, a warm up, final
tweaking and it was ready for a road test.
Tony & I took the Ranchero for a
test drive, after Tony backed on to the street and put into drive, well
lets just say, acceleration will accompany the noise now. I think the
little Corvairs would be shot past now.
When we returned, cleaned up, it
was time for lunch.
To recap this Session
Old Cars, Good Friends and Good
Food, always a great combination.
